10:30-12pm Yoga For Heart Health

In this workshop we will discuss the basic anatomy and functions of the heart including common heart conditions.  Learn about how the regular practice of yoga can be used to reduce risk factors for heart disease and manage symptoms of existing heart-related conditions.  We will demonstrate poses (asana) that are contraindicated and should be avoided or modified for certain cardiovascular conditions.   Breath work (pranayama) will be demonstrated and practiced to manage the stress-response system, improve cardiovascular health, and increase well-being.  Lastly, learn how the community aspect of yoga is healing for those who have experienced life altering diagnoses such as a heart attack or heart failure.

Led by Jason Ryan, MD, UConn Health Cardiologist and Susan Averna, PhD, a psychologist and registered yoga teacher.
